Peri-men-o-pause…Oh My!

Peri-menopause: This is the initial phase before menopause actually begins…Is This Your Perimenopause Transition?

Changes I’ve noticed: dry eyes at night, interrupted sleep patterns, waking up in the witching hours of the night, fluctuating libido, plateaued weight loss. I’ve only experienced a couple night sweats.

Revelations: They keep rolling in! I’m questioning my career, thinking of downsizing and selling my home (empty nest) for a cob home, deciding where I want to live, etc. I’m dreaming of how I truly want to be in my next chapter of life!

Ohhh, and when did I become outspoken?!

Self Care: I won’t be running to a doctor (aka pharma pill pusher) to start a regime of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with synthetic pills that take away the range of emotions I’m experiencing, while bestowing me with unpleasant side effects and taxing my liver. Other than emergencies, I haven’t subscribed to Western medicine in some time – and have never felt better!

I do take natural supplements and eat organic, nutrient dense foods as much as possible. I do eat out on occasion and I enjoy a sweet treat here and there, but I no longer make it a daily habit…I once had a hot, long-lasting love affair with food!

Supplements I recently started taking (so far, so good):

Lifestyle: Yoga, meditation and being outdoors, barefoot on the grass/ in the dirt make me feel good too…there are microbes in the dirt that are actually beneficial to our good health. I feel connected to our beautiful planet when I’m outside in my bare feet! Americans are in deep need of self-care rituals – rituals to help combat the unhealthy effects of the modern technology-ridden rat race.

Listening & Trusting: I’ve learned to trust my body and what it’s telling me. I’ve come to this intimate level of trust with myself after diligent research, reading  and discovering the latest scientific findings on health; specifically women’s health.

Christiane Northrup, M.D.: Her book is, “The Wisdom of Menopause.” I highly recommend it for women who are approaching/in peri-menopause or who are currently going through menopause. I have found it full of helpful information and enlightenment!

A woman’s change of life should be welcomed and embraced for all its worth.
